Resurgence of Chikungunya Across Asia & the Americas in 2025

A recent global report from the World Health Organization indicates that the mosquito-borne disease chikungunya has seen a marked resurgence in 2025, with more than 445,000 suspected and confirmed cases reported across 40 countries by the end of September. Of particular note, India’s states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu reported significant rises in confirmed cases in the early months of the year. Meanwhile, Brazil accounted for the majority of reported cases in the Americas, with over 96 000 confirmed cases and more than 100 associated deaths. The surge reflects a combination of seasonal transmission patterns, travel-imported cases, and local transmission in countries that previously had fewer outbreaks. Public-health systems in affected regions are being urged to ramp up mosquito-control measures, surveillance, early diagnosis, and community awareness to avoid further spread. The resurgence underscores that even diseases that may not dominate headlines can re-emerge sharply under favorable ecological and social conditions.
